don’t judge a hymnbook by its cover

Submitted by BC, Connecticut

Years ago, we lived in the Philippines and I joined a church choir in which there was a singer who was, quite obviously, unhappy and generally disliked. She complained often and didn’t seem to know how to be interested in others. I decided to try to befriend her and hoped she would reciprocate.

Months later, I delivered a glorious baby girl in the local hospital on December 23rd. To my surprise, guess who showed up with flowers and gifts for the baby on Christmas Day? I was stunned and welcomed the beginning of a friendship.

Dial forward thirty plus years: our son remembered the story of this woman and shared it with his third graders as a thought-provoking lesson in kindness. Who knew?
